Treatment For Eczema from Dr. Mary Lupo, Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology
Dr. Mary Lupo is a board-certified dermatologist in New Orleans, LA. She has dedicated her career to helping patients of all ages address general, medical, and cosmetic skin issues. This includes eczema, a common condition seen in both children and adults. Learning what eczema is and what causes it is the first step in determining the best way to treat it.

What is eczema?

Eczema, sometimes called atopic dermatitis, results in red, itchy skin. This inflammatory condition can be a chronic issue for patients, and typically develops in early childhood. However, adults can develop atopic dermatitis and may notice it occurs with certain triggers.

What causes eczema?

The causes of eczema are unknown. It has not been determined if it’s arrival is linked to genetics or if it is due to specific environmental exposures. However, it may become more noticeable with triggers. Triggers for eczema may include:
  • Environmental changes
  • Sunlight exposure
  • Exposure to products such as certain soaps or creams
  • Stress

What treatment is available for eczema?

Most patients respond well to eczema treatments that involve topical creams and antibiotics. These creams are used on the areas where eczema occurs to calm them and provide relief from the itching and uncomfortable feeling these flare-ups can cause. Patients then work with their dermatologist to develop a skin care regimen to reduce the chances of flare-ups by keeping the skin moisturized.
