This new modality first came to market under the name Fraxel, to describe the effect of removing (ablating) small cylinders of epidermis and dermis in order to stimulate a healing response of new collagen in the dermis, as well as repaired sun damaged skin on the surface. Because it is done “fractionally” it avoids the long healing times and complications of full resurfacing. It also results, however, in the need for multiple sessions. For best results, 5 treatments are recommended for most patients. The procedure is typically performed monthly.
