Q: Is It OK to Go to a Tanning Booth (Wearing a 50 SPF) in Between Fraxel Treatments? I want to protect my face but still get a body-tan. Will a SPF 50 sunblock provide enough protection to the face during 7-minute sun booth sessions?

A: No. Tanning bed ultraviolet light is a higher and more concentrated dose of those deeply-penetrating, skin cancer, pigmentation-stimulating and wrinkle-causing UV rays. No sunscreen is a match for the damage these rays cause. You are causing more damage and preventing the Fraxel from giving you the rejuvenating results you are paying good money for.

Q: Are Fraxel Re:pair and Re:store Painful? Which is More Uncomfortable?

A: Fraxel Repair is ablative resurfacing and hurts a lot. Fraxel Restore and Dual are much less painful and typically require no sedation or nerve blocks.

Q: I am considering Fraxel Restore to eliminate age spots, remove minor acne scaring and minimize fine lines and pores. I am also undergoing Sculptra to replace age-related loss of volume and wrinkling in my face. Is it safe to combine the two?

A: Fraxel Dual (or Restore) combined with Sculptra is one of my favorite one-two punches of non-surgical rejuvenation. The Fraxel improves the skin color and texture while the Sculptra reshapes and re-volumizes the aging face. Sculptra improves those concavities that cause shadows and a gaunt look. They are safe to do in tandem. I usually wait 1-2 weeks between then for best results.

Q: What Treatments Do You Recommend for Atrophic Acne Scarring?

A: There are several options to consider. Fraxel Restore is safe for most skin types, and when done in a series of 5-6 sessions, it will stimulate new collagen production. The sessions are spaced about 4 weeks apart and in between the sessions, I recommend topical prescription retinoids, growth factors and of course, sunscreens. In cases of severe scarring, I may combined Fraxel with subcision and do some Radiesse filling after the course is complete.
