IPL & Vascular Lasers

“The most popular light treatment because in 3-5 sessions, with no downtime from work or your life, the skin is brightened and lightened.”
- Dr. Lupo
Ongoing advances in the field of dermatology have brought about significant increase in treatment options. There are so many effective, non-invasive cosmetic treatments available today that it can be hard to imagine a single therapy solving multiple skin conditions. Dr. Mary Lupo believes this to be the case with IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light treatment. The first physician in Louisiana to incorporate this treatment into her practice, Dr. Lupo has consistently and successfully used IPL since 1999. Today, it continues to be one of the most popular treatment options at the Lupo Center.

There is a wide variety of skin problems that can be corrected with either IPL treatment or treatment with a vascular laser. At Lupo Center, we use the Excel V laser or IPL to target brown and red discoloration, facial veins, unwanted hair, acne scarring and more. Skin treated with IPL or vascular laser will become smoother in texture, and there will be a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, as well. Rosacea is another condition that can be significantly improved with light treatments, as medications alone rarely provide complete relief from symptoms such as redness and flushing.

IPL treatments differ from laser treatments, using broad band light energy from the visible and near-infrared light spectrum. Treatment with intense pulsed light is a safe and effective, non-invasive way to address photoaging. In fact, this form of skin rejuvenation is sometimes referred to as a “fotofacial” or “photorejuvenation.” IPL works by applying heat to tighten and shrink targeted blood vessels while simultaneously stimulating the production of new collagen for improved skin texture.

If you are looking at ways to improve the redness of your skin and get rid of brown spots, the IPL and Vascular lasers at Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology can help. Watch the video as Dr. Mary Lupo explains all about it.

What is IPL & Vascular Laser, and how do they work?

IPL & Vascular lasers are energy-based devices that help improve skin redness, flushing, and inflammation. They also reduce broken capillaries and larger veins on the face and the legs.

They work by targeting the hemoglobin in the blood vessel, causing the blood vessel to spasm and shrink.

IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light. That means that it's a broadband of wavelength light that improves the redness and often brown spots and overall rejuvenation of the skin by stimulating collagen production.

The vascular lasers are precise to one wavelength, we use the Excel V, a 532-nanometer laser, and we use it for Rosacea, redness, and sun damage.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

IPL & Vascular lasers are considered no downtime treatments. You may have a little bit of redness and puffiness, but it is inconsequential and normal activities can be continued.

Most people need a series of 3 sessions spaced 3 - 4 weeks apart for optimal long-term results.

Please feel free to contact us if you need further information.

The gentleness of IPL and vascular lasers in the care of skin conditions allows patients to immediately return to their normal routine. There is no downtime and no side effects to either type of treatment, which may be performed on the same day as an important event or even during your lunch hour. It is possible to apply makeup immediately following a treatment session.

IPL and vascular laser treatments are ideal for many of our patients. We recommend that a good skin care program be instituted after treatment so that optimal results may be maintained for a longer period of time.

In 1999 I was the first position in Louisiana to perform a procedure called photo rejuvenation. Photo rejuvenation refers to a technique utilizing intense pulse light that improves the appearance of the skin with no down time. With intense pulse light, the target in the skin that is heated are blood vessels and pigment cells and when they absorb the laser energy, heat is generated and that heat stimulates a healing response. When the response occurs, the skin is tightened the pores are improved and the skin is made more luminesce because red and brown spots fade. In addition to the intense pulse light we also use a vascular laser called the Excel V. The Excel V is a laser as opposed to intense pulse light and we use this laser for more intense beam for more distinct and deep blood vessels that are located on the face and on the legs, so here at the Lupo center we have the spectrum of treatment that can be best suited to whatever your individual needs are!

Why do you prefer to use Excel V Laser than other lasers on the market?

The Cutera Excel V Laser has fit beautifully in my practice. I pride myself on buying equipment that is state of the art, and what I have to have is something that makes business sense for me as a practicing dermatologist but it has to work for my patients, and give me a level of efficacy and safety that I can give to my patients, what I like about the Excel V is I think it has all of the benefits, of a pulsed dye laser as far as efficacy without a lot of the negatives, the disposable dye pack costs and the somewhat skittish maintenance issues with pulses dye lasers. So from a business stand point I have been very, very happy with the Excel V
