Q. Can I do Juvederm if I am currently taking Accutane?
A. Yes. You must avoid resurfacing treatments such as peels and lasers while on Accutane, but filler injections with products like Juvederm are perfectly safe.
Q. I have heard that I should look for a doctor who injects Juvederm using the "fern pattern". Please explain what this is and if it is indeed special or different.
A. Juvederm is a very versatile filler. It can be used in all levels of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It can be used for re-volumizing the temple and the lips (many other fillers cannot be used in both areas). The name of this injection is just a clever name for a technique that is routinely used by expert injectors to ease out fine lines. Fanning, linear threading and serial puncture are other types of injection techniques. The most important thing is the experience, ethics and judgment of the injector. It is not the filler or technique used.
Q. I had Juvederm ultra plus (one syringe on both sides) and was quite pleased with the results, except that the lines did not completely vanish, but were fairly less noticeable. It’s been 6 months now and although Juvederm effect is still there, it isn't as fresh. I am considering another session of the ultra plus. Please advise if I should wait for the entire Juvederm to dissolve further or would it be advisable to undergo another ultra plus session. If yes, what amount would you advise? Thanks!
A. Juvederm lasts about 12 months (meaning some is still in there) but the effect gradually diminishes over that 12 months, requiring a touch-up of 0.4-0.8cc (at month 4-8) in most patients to return to the initial correction. Studies have shown that with constant maintenance, hyaluronic acid fillers can even stimulate your own collage over time. So, pump it up!
