A. I do both light chemical peels as well as my favorite, Diamond Glow for patients with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Diamond Glow is a type of non-particle surface abrasion that incorporates dermal infusion to achieve skin brightening. The brightening agents used for the dermal infusion lighten the abnormal dark spots without changing your natural skin color. No hydroquinone need be used. I especially like to combine Diamond Glow with an at-home program using my Vivifying serum C and sunscreens every morning and prescription retinoids like Tazorac at night.
Q. Is Diamond Glow safe on dark, African-American skin?
A. Yes. Diamond Glow is a combination of microdermabrasion and dermal infusion. I have been using this technology on dark skin for many years and find it safe and effective, especially to fade dark acne scars and even-out irregular pigment tones to make the skin one, even color without giving the skin a bleached-out ashy hue.
Q. I am on Retin A and seeing improvement of my skin texture. I understand there are procedures that should be avoided while on Retin A. Can I do a microdermabrasion? I have a special occasion and I would like to look great.
A. Light chemical peels and one of my favorites, Diamond Glow, which is a special type of light mechanical surface abrasion plus dermal infusion are great for those on Retin A to enhance the results quickly. I usually recommend that you discontinue the Retin A one week before chemical peel to prevent the acid from penetrating deeper than expected.
Q. I have dark skin and used to pick my acne. Now I have dark spots and scars. I have heard that most lasers are not safe on darker skin. What are my options?
A. You are correct that most lasers risk more side effects in darker skin. Cooltouch, an infrared, "color blind" laser can help irregular scars, but for the discoloration, salicylic or glycolic acid peels are even better. Diamond Glow are great and are a safe option to reduce the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that resulted from your picking.
