Using IPL treatment for acne and acne scars in New Orleans area dermatological practice
By Dr. Mary LupoWhile IPL does not resurface like Fraxel or CO2 lasers, the deeper penetrating wavelengths do improve skin texture. The best part of IPL is that there is little discomfort and no flaking, crusting or downtime. Only a small amount of “peppering” (some accentuation of dark spots before they fade a few days later), or dullness or redness may occur for a few days after treatment.
The treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and a series of 3 is usually advised. But the result is luminous skin, with dark spots and redness dramatically improved.
IPL can improve red and brown acne scars that remain after acne clears. Post-acne discoloration can last months after acne has cleared, but IPL can mean full recovery from the psychological scars acne can cause. Rosacea papules and pustules can be improved with rosacea medications, but the dilated capillaries require treatments like IPL to resolve the entire spectrum of rosacea symptoms. IPL improves overall skin tone. And because red and brown is targeted, it is the original technology that pioneered the medical procedure known as “photo-rejuvenation” which is the rejuvenation of skin by the application of light. If there are severe acne scars or severe sun damage, IPL is often paired with deeper lasers like CO2 or Fraxel.
IPL is useful for a condition on the neck called poikiloderma. This is the result of chronic sun damage on the neck, making the skin both red and brown but also causing a pebbled and puckered texture.
