IPL Treatment for Acne Scars New Orleans LA area
Many New Orleans, LA area patients who have had acne in the past may still have discolored scars that remain as constant reminders. However, thanks to continued medical advances, dermatologists now have some non-invasive ways to help patients improve the texture and tone of their skin and reduce the appearance of discolored acne scars. In many cases, our dermatologists will recommend IPL treatment—not only for discolored acne scars but for treating poor skin texture and tone.

What is IPL treatment?

IPL stands for “intense pulsed light.” This is a unique non-surgical device that improves texture and discoloration of the skin. This high-intensity light targets the treatment area through heat. Treatment helps ensure a more uniform skin tone and texture, while treating problems on the skin, including:
  • Acne scar discoloration
  • Blotchy pigmentation
  • Surgical/trauma scarring
  • Rosacea
  • Dyschromia
With IPL treatments, patients with the above conditions will be able to improve the health and overall appearance of their skin.

What can I expect during my IPL treatment?

Treatments are performed in our office under the care and direction of our dedicated dermatological team. The light penetrates the skin. Patients can request topical numbing creams if they experience any discomfort. Then, our team educates patients on aftercare and discusses what patients will notice as their skin heals. Redness, bruising, crusting, and flaking last 5 days or less, but reveals bright, youthful skin underneath!

Who is a candidate for IPL treatment?

In terms of acne scarring, patients must have a thorough evaluation to determine if IPL treatment will be beneficial for their specific acne scar type. Depressed acne scarring, which can leave large divots in the surface of the skin, cannot be improved with IPL treatment, though post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation acne scars can. With proper evaluation, patients can learn more about the type of scarring they are experiencing, and which treatment is best.

What can be used for depressed acne scars?

For patients who have depressions in the skin from their previous acne blemishes, Drs. Mary Lupo of the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology may recommend dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are gels that a dermatologist can inject directly into the depression scar to raise it, reduce its depth and make it more flush with your normal skin. Dermal fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid and are also used for patients who have wrinkles and folds that are impacting their appearance. These fillers are safe, effective, and affordable for many of the patients who visit our practice seeking cosmetic solutions for the skin.
