Lasers & Devices

Laser dermatology is changing skin care in New Orleans

Treatments using Lasers & Devices may include any of the following procedures or devices: A laser optically amplifies light, focusing the energy into a very tiny spot. Albert Einstein established the theory of laser energy in 1917, and frankly, the idea was scary to many people. Today, we take laser technology for granted in CDs and DVDs, barcode scanners at the grocery store, law enforcement devices for speeding, and a multitude of other everyday applications. However, you may not realize the extent to which lasers are changing the field of dermatology and advancing skin care for women and men in the New Orleans area, so let’s take a look...

Some of the most groundbreaking lasers have been developed to address skin problems and deliver gorgeous complexions. Each piece of equipment represents a significant investment of money and training time, and no one device serves all dermatological purposes. Dr. Mary Lupo of the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology brings customized skin care to patients in the Southern Louisiana Gulf Coast area with a full suite of safe, FDA-cleared lasers and light devices, and other innovative therapies to help give patients the beautiful skin they desire. Here are just a few examples of the laser and devices treatments available at the Lupo Center:
  • The Fraxel Restore Dual Wavelength system is one of the most versatile lasers used at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic & General Dermatology. The doctors use it to non-invasively resurface skin, improving the appearance of wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, and melasma. It is used to remove actinic keratosis (a pre-cancerous skin condition), and to remediate acne and other types of scarring. It penetrates deeper layers of skin and stimulates natural production of collagen, without harm to the surface.

  • Treatments with the Clear + Brilliant fractional laser fight signs of aging and restore natural glow to the complexion. It brightens skin tone by refreshing from the inside out.

  • The Active/Deep FX Fractional CO2 Resurfacing laser is ideal for more dramatic resurfacing on the face, neck, and chest – with a little extra recovery time.

  • The Lumenis M22 is an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) device that is a non-laser, broad band, light treatment using energy in the visible and near-infrared light spectrum. It is best as a treatment for overall photoaging, often called photorejuvenation or fotofacial.

  • Using VariLite and Cutera 532 nm lasers, the Lupo Center doctors are able to precisely target and eliminate vascular lesions and even very small spots of pigmentation on all skin types and ethnicities.

  • The CoolTouch CT3 Plus non-ablative laser utilizes a specific light wavelength that reduces acne inflammation and improves mild wrinkles. It is safe for all areas of the body and all skin colors.

  • Laser hair removal liberates patients from daily shaving routines or painful waxing procedures.

What dermatology laser options can patients expect at your practice?

I usually review with every patient the option from the more aggressive to the less aggressive and to the minimally invasive.

One of the nice things about the Lupo Center is we have several different lasers; we don't just have one laser and try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

What types of laser treatments do you offer at your practice?

  • Fractional Co2 Resurfacing (most aggressive one)
  • Fraxel Dual (can be done more or less aggressively)
  • CoolTouch laser
  • Excel V laser
  • IPL (non-laser light device)
  • Radiofrequency microneedling
  • Regular microneedling
  • Light chemical peels
  • Clear and Brilliant (less aggressive Fraxel that has no downtime)
  • Dermal infusion (combination between microdermabrasion and a light chemical peel)
The spectrum of lasers available is so varied that the patient can decide to have one aggressive laser treatment or a series of less aggressive laser treatments.

The field of dermatology is changing every day. Are you are ready for a dermatologist who evolves with those advances? Call the Lupo Center for Aesthetic & General Dermatology at (504) 777-3047.

Simple tips to look young in your sixties

Non Invasive Fillers and Devices for Rejuvenation of the Eyes by Dr. Mary Lupo
Dr. Lupo shares her secrets to looking youthful in your sixties.

Good morning! We are going to have a little coffee chat. Here I am and I am going to be going to my 50th high school reunion next year. And I want to share some of my strategies for overall health that I have done for over 30 years. So listen up 30 and 40 year olds and even your 20 year olds. The most important way to look great in your sixties without the scalpel is to take care of yourself with sunscreen, minimal low level laser treatments, low level neurotoxin injections and occasional filler injections strategically placed. Usually never more than a syringe is needed. Now why is this important? Well think about your heart. If you are 67 and you have never done the right things, if you smoked, if you didn’t eat right, if you didn’t exercise, odds are you are going to need a stent or a by-pass because you didn’t do the little things early on as a prevention. The same thing is true with your skin, especially the skin of your face. Start now and you will not regret it in your sixties, I promise.

Non-surgical treatments for slimmer, tighter jawline

Non-surgical treatments for slimmer, tighter jawline by Dr. Mary Lupo
Concerned about your jawline when on Zoom calls? Dr. Lupo talks about how it is possible to tighten that jawline with fillers.

So I have a lot of my patients who are very concerned about how they look on their Zoom calls and I would like to give some recommendations of what you can define and improve the jawline. So the first thing I must do is if there is any submental fat or jowl fat, I need to reduce the fat. Here we either use focal points of Kybella injection in this area or underneath here. Or we use our Coolsculpting device and our new favorite the Evoke device by InMode which tightens the skin and reduces the fat, all in one treatment. Of course it is a series of treatments, but the treatments help both laxity and fat. The next thing I do is evaluate the submandibular, which is right here, salivary gland because if it is enlarged and hanging, it makes the jawline wavy. So we use a little neuromodulator in that area to shrink that salivary gland in order to make it less apparent. So we use neuromodulators for that. In addition, at the same time, the upper platysmal band goes into the jawl and when we inject the platysmal band in the upper portion, it reduces the pull down at the jowl and gives you a more straight line. Many of you saw during the quarantine that I did my sculpture tooth stick where I injected along my jawline and in front of my ear to get a defined jawline. So that is another trick that we do here is to use fillers along the jawline to improve that sculpted definition and give you a refined and defined jawline. So we specialize in these non surgical treatments, combinations are always the best way to go. Some people need one thing, some people need all three things. It is all individualised. So contact us if you would like a consult to improve that jawline.

Variety of lasers and devices for all your skin concerns!

Variety of lasers and devices for all your skin concerns! by Dr. Mary Lupo
Dr. Lupo walks us through her office to explain the modern equipment and technology that is available to address a range of skin concerns.

Here at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology, we have an array of devices. And the reason we need all these devices is because we want to suit your skin and your needs. So let’s review our favorites. Here we have the Cutera Xcel V Plus. This is a very versatile device. We use it for patients with acne and rosacea. We use it for blue veins on the face and on the legs. It also helps with surgical scars. In addition, the laser Genesis component of it is wonderful for acne and for laser toning for early skin ageing. Here we have Lumenis M22 device. The state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light from the company that invented the technology. The M22 is extremely powerful and versatile and we use it for both red and brown rosacea as well as certain cases of hyperpigmentation. Now we are going to, what I call radiofrequency row. Here we will start with the Evoke. This is a device. Six treatments are required. It goes under your neck. The settings can be either for tightening or fat reduction and tightening. It is sequence of six treatments, optimally done weekly. The Thermage, and we have the most advanced current version of this called the Flex. The Thermage is the state of the art bulk heating radiofrequency device that is used all over the face, the neck, the body, the arms, legs. It is particularly good for a non surgical tightening around the eyes. Here we have the BTL Exilis device. Exilis is extremely popular in our office. It is radiofrequency and ultrasound, lower intensity. So it does require a series of treatments. But the results that are seen in 3-4 months are measurable. Now we have our first radiofrequency microneedling device. Ths one is from Lutronic, it is called the Genius. It is the most current device from this company and it combines insulated microneedling for mechanical wounding of the skin combined with the radiofrequency energy to tighten skin. We are particularly fond of this device in all skin tones for acne scars. Here we have a morpheous device. Morpheus from InMode is an extremely versatile device. It is radiofrequency and microneedling combined and more depth to the needle to do more types of needs in our patients. Now, we have here what we call the Big Gun. This is our Lumenis Ultrapulse Active Deep FX CO2 laser. This is the laser we use for the most severe cases in light skin for deep wrinkles and folds and for certain scarring. Here we have probably the most versatile device for all skin types. It is our Fraxel Dual. It has two lasers in one device. In some patients we combine the lasers in one treatment and do it Dual. With the Dual we can address both brown spots and fine lines but in darker skin with acne scars and wrinkles what we like to have here is the fifteen-fifty deeper wave length that goes deeper into the skin. Here we have the first cousin of Fraxel, also by Solta, it is called the Clear Embrolien. Clear and Brilliant is the device we use for both pigment and early agein. It is the number 1 popular device in our millenial patients in their thirties to reverse early signs of sun damage from sun bathing. In addition, certain patients get something called the skin pen which is the FDA approved skin pen for mechanical microneedling without radio frequency. Below that we have the Iridex Veralite, this is a 532 laser that we exclusively use for our African American patients with a medical condition called dermatosis papulosa nigra. (not clear) those unsightly moles that you get around your eyes and on your neck and on your face as you get older. Also very popular with younger patients is the Diamond Glow. The Diamond Glow is a combination of infusion of a liquid into the skin of my choosing. Sometimes it’s for brightening. Sometimes it’s for acne. But in addition to that there is a diamond phrase microdermabrasion component to it and suction to deep clean the pores. And it has (not clear) that can be adjusted to your skin type and medical needs. And now, here we have the best laser hair device on the market. The Lumiesce Splendor X. Why can I say that so definitively? It is the only device on the market that combines two wavelengths with one treatment to treat the entire length of the hair shaft. In addition, it has the 10-64 component which is the only that can be safely used on darker skin. But it also has two forms of cooling. One is contact cooling and the other is forced air cooling. The result is the most painless laser hair removal system on the market and in addition one of the fastest. We can do an entire man’s back in about 15 minutes. In addition, there is a special suction to get rid of the plume so you don’t have to have that unpleasant smell when you are getting your laser hair removal. And since we are talking about two’s, here we are. We do DualSculpting here at the Lupo Centre. That means we can put two CoolSculpting devices on you at the same time to two different areas. So you can get your results twice as fast and in half the time. So message us if you want to know what device will be good for you or make an appointment for a consultation. I think we probably have something that you need.
