Laser Hair Removal - Related Questions

Q. My 15 year old daughter wants laser hair reduction for her underarms and bikini. Is this safe?

A. I have often called laser hair reduction treatments the most practical luxury you can give yourself. The younger you are the greater the long term practicality of this investment. Imagine a lifetime without needing to purchase razors or pay for salon waxing! And what about the spontaneity of being able to go to the beach and not worrying if you forgot to wax or shave. Another benefit is no more ingrown hairs and since the follicle is destroyed, no stubble or dark spots at the follicle. This is a safe treatment that would be a wonderful treat for your daughter. Just be sure to have it done where there is physician (preferable a dermatologist) supervision for best and safest results.

Q. How long after Filler into my lips can I get laser hair removal on my upper lip and chin?

A. There is no problem doing these two procedures on the same day. I usually like to do the laser hair removal treatment after the filler injections. Since I only use the new Restylane L and Juvederm XC, which contain lidocaine for pain reduction, the numbing effect may further reduce any pain from the laser. Doing the filler before the laser, however, would also not be a problem if the patient's schedule makes that the preferred order.

Q. I have fine hair and rosacea, can I get laser treatment for both?

A. IPL, one of my favorite treatments for the redness of rosacea, has the added benefit of decreasing facial hair. While not as potent as Lightsheer laser, it will thin out facial hair, especially if you shave immediately prior to the treatment. It is a secondary benefit of the Intense Pulsed Light.
