What types of skin cancer may be detected?

Skin cancer types
There are several types of skin cancer that are diagnosed with a biopsy at our practice. Dr. Mary Lupo, our Board-certified dermatologist, will educate patients on the results of their biopsy and what treatment is best for their specific diagnosis. Below are the most common types:
- Basal cell carcinoma cancer – basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that develops in the basal cells. It is typically seen as a lump or brown patch on areas that have received extensive sun exposure, specifically the neck and face.
- Squamous cell carcinoma cancer – this cancer develops quickly on the outermost layer of skin. It is one of the varieties of cancer typically seen in her practice and the most treatable. It is often a result of overexposure to sunlight and appears as a patch, ulcer, or lump on the skin.
- Melanoma skin cancer – melanoma is the deadliest variety of skin cancer. It is typically diagnosed around moles that have changed or grown over time. This is because it attaches to the pigment-producing cells.

Board-certified dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology Mary P. Lupo, MD, has been a leader in the field of non-surgical rejuvenation since 1983. She travels internationally to teach her innovative techniques, and her reputation brings in patients from around the country. She started the first formal residency training program for injectables and peels in 1983 at Tulane Medical School and served as past president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, adjunct professor of dermatology at Tulane, and a founder of Cosmetic Boot Camp. Dr. Lupo holds membership in many prestigious dermatology associations, participates in clinical trials for the approval of new drugs and devices, and acts as an advisor for numerous aesthetic-minded companies.
Dr. Lupo was recently recognized as a trailblazer for women in dermatology and for her dedication to educating dermatology residents and fellows.
