UV radiation causes genetic changes in skin DNA, resulting in the uncontrolled growth of skin cells that can form scaly lesions and transform into skin cancer.
1. Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common and treatable type of cancer.
2. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is typically curable. However, if allowed to spread to other organs, this type of cancer kills about 2,500 people in the United States yearly.
3. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Every year, it kills nearly 9,000 Americans.
At the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology, we use a clinical biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of a suspicion skin cancer.
Treatment options include MOHs surgery, surgical excision, electrocautery, topical prescription medications, or a combination approach to remove the cancer.
