What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that can be present at all stages of one’s life. Infants can develop acne, as well as adults, though the condition is often correlated with teenagers going through puberty.
What causes acne?
The primary thought is that hormonal changes cause acne. However, this is just one of many reasons why it can develop. Acne may be a result of:
- Changes in hormones
- Excess oil production
- Dietary factors
- Increased stress
- Genetics
- Medications
What are some myths about acne?
The causes of acne have been misconstrued over the years, and Dr. Mary Lupo to puts some of these myths to rest. Dirty skin is not the reason for acne. However, washing the face with harsh cleansers and brushes may irritate the skin and make acne worse. Over washing removes healthy oils needed to keep the skin moisturized. Additionally, cosmetics may contribute to acne, but only if patients are using oily makeup and are not properly removing it each night. Eating greasy food does not contribute to acne production, along with the consumption of chocolate.

She started the first formal residency training program for injectables and peels in 1983 at Tulane Medical School and served as past president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, adjunct professor of dermatology at Tulane, and a founder of Cosmetic Boot Camp. Dr. Lupo holds membership in many prestigious dermatology associations, participates in clinical trials for the approval of new drugs and devices, and acts as an advisor for numerous aesthetic-minded companies.
Dr. Lupo was recently recognized as a trailblazer for women in dermatology and for her dedication to educating dermatology residents and fellows.
