Dear Dr. Lupo:
My Proactiv acne routine isn't working well enough for acne. My acne is pretty bad and painful. Are there acne treatments that are best to get rid of it for good? I heard laser acne treatments may be best.

Dear Renee:
In some cases, patients might want to choose a non-medicine approach to acne therapy. One of the options we have seen be successful in our practice for the past 15 years is CoolTouch. CoolTouch is a laser with energy in the infrared range. It has multiple benefits. The deep heating shrinks the sebaceous gland. When the oil gland is smaller, pores not only look refined, but this decreases the oil that the bacteria need to survive. When both oil and bacteria are decreased, inflammation and scarring are reduced. In addition, the heating of the surrounding collagen helps reverse existing scarring.
Patients do best when also using a retinoid (Retin-A, Differin, Tazorac) because these products act to prevent the clogs in the pores, as well as are anti-inflammatory. The most complete product to treat acne is still Accutane. If properly prescribed, it decreases bacteria because of its action on the sebaceous glad, unclogs the pores and is anti-inflammatory as well.

Since Allergan released their newest filler product, Juvederm Voluma, a few months ago, we have been getting lots questions about what makes this filler different from Juvederm and how can the two fillers work together to achieve optimal results.

Dr. Lupo Steps Down from Her 30 Year Teaching Career at Tulane

Dr. Lupo is pictured with Tulane dermatology residents Jessica Clark, Jac Chapman and Robert Bacigalupi (left to right) during her last day of teaching on a monthly basis at Tulane's Resident Cosmetic Clinic. Dr. Lupo will continue to serve as a faculty member and will teach or mentor as needed.
In 1983, as chief resident of dermatology at Tulane Heath Science Center, Dr. Lupo started the Resident Cosmetic Clinic and has acted as director of this educational clinic since its inception.
