At the Lupo Center, our goal is to provide each patient with natural-looking improvements to their appearance to make them look and feel like their personal best. One way we do this is by customizing each patient’s treatment whether it’s with injectables, lasers, skin care products or a combination protocol. This video shows how Dr. Lupo individualizes a dermal filler treatment by using both a needle and a cannula.
When treating a small, precise area with dermal filler, such as the lips, fine lines or a scar, a needle is usually best. When a patient is looking to enhance a larger area, a cannula may be the better option. It is more flexible and can be used with a feathering-like method under the skin to plump up and contour areas on the face, jawline, chest, hands and even sagging skin above the knees! A cannula may also be used in the lips when creating an overall fuller appearance.
Both a needle and cannula are safe and effective options when in the hands of an expert injector. We find that treatment with a cannula is a little more comfortable and has less bruising. Because a cannula has a blunt tip, a needle is used to make an insertion point on the surface of the skin. This insertion point reduces the number of sticks in a treatment and allows the longer cannula to reach more areas. The blunt tip of a cannula also makes it more difficult to puncture blood vessels thus reduces bruising. With both a needle and a cannula, we use topical numbing to make treatments more comfortable.
