Detect Melanoma with a Sticker!
Every day at the Lupo Center is skin cancer awareness day – day in and day out, we are checking for suspicious spots even if you’re visiting us for a cosmetic treatment! In the past, the only way to test for melanoma was to biopsy the mole.
Now, Dr. Mary Lupo and Dr. Neil Farnsworth offer a quick, painless and scalpel-free method: DermTech Smart Sticker! Yep, it’s as easy as putting a sticker on your skin and pulling it off!
The proprietary adhesive on the DermTech Smart Sticker is strong enough to pull 1.5 milligrams of tissue from the top layers of your skin (where its genomic information can be accessed), but not so strong that it would cause pain, bleeding or damage to the site. The adhesive lifts the genomic material from the suspicious spot, which is then sent to the DermTech’s Gene Lab for examination.
Unlike a biopsy, which evaluates only 1-2% of the mole, DermTech Smart Sticker captures cells from 100% of the mole’s surface and is 99% accurate in detecting melanoma.
Step 1 – Skin Prep
We rub the spot to turn up the skin cells.
Step 2 – Sticker Applied
The DermTech Smart Sticker is pressed onto the spot, lifted off and placed on a collection strip. This is repeated three more times on the same spot.
Step 3 – Lab Testing
We send the collection strip to the lab and results are provide to us in about three business days. If the results detect atypical cells, we will discuss a treatment plan.
Easy as 1, 2, 3 and scalpel free! So don’t put off your annual skin exam any longer. When melanoma is detected early, the survival rate is 99%. But it drops to 25% once it spreads distantly. These new Smart Stickers can save your life!
