Is there a "better" time of year to get a mole check? Does it make a difference if it's done before or after summer?

Dear Anna:
You should always do the "ABCDE" mole check on yourself throughout the year. Check for change in Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution of a mole (see chart to the right). If there is no immediate concern, then I'd say the best time to get your annual full body skin exam by one of our dermatologists is at the end of summer. Remember to stay safe in the sun all year long to prevent moles from changing.

All you have to do is login to your BD account and click on "Earn Points." There, you will see a link to the Brilliant Distinctions Mall. Once you're in the mall, you can browse through the participating websites. When are ready to shop or travel, select the vendor of your choice and click "Shop Now." You will be linked to a unique website for that vendor, which will recognize your Brilliant Distinctions membership, and points will be added to your Brilliant Distinctions account upon checking out. It's that simple!

 To raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, and to encourage early detection through self-exams, the American Academy of Dermatology designates the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday (May 5, 2014) and May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology provides several ways to stay skin healthy: - Prevent. Never leave home without the proper sunscreen and enhance your sun protection with a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, shade and dietary supplements.
- Detect. Look for new changing, itching or bleeding spots on your skin (see chart above).
- Live. Schedule your annual skin exam with one of our dermatologists.

A MESSAGE FROM DR MARY LUPO:
Time and time again, we hear stories from patients as well stories on TV and in newspapers about "doctors" positioning themselves as fully qualified dermatologists, when in reality, they did not complete a residency in an aesthetic specialty and are practicing outside of their field of training.
Particularly in the field of dermatology, I am concerned about the increasing number of patients coming to my office after suffering complications as a result of untrained or uncertified physicians and non-physicians performing medical procedures with injectables and lasers. Even more frightening is when those patients are treated with illegal products. I believe all patients deserve to know the truth and qualifications of their treating physician and advise all patients do their homework before having any procedure done.
I want to ensure you that both Dr. Holcomb and I are board certified dermatologists who have specific education and training in a number of medical and cosmetic treatments and are up-to-date on the latest developments in the field of dermatology. While we have gone through training, we are also qualified to train others.
