May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
|
In an effort to raise awareness about the prevention of skin cancer, the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology is joining the American Academy of Dermatology to spread the word throughout May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and one American dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, almost every hour.
While tan skin is usually considered prettier skin, a tan is a sign that your skin has been injured. Whether the tan comes from the sun or a tanning bed, damage is occurring to the skin, which speeds up the aging process and increases the risk for all types of skin cancer.
Takes the necessary steps to protect yourself and your family:
- Apply sunscreen and use at least one ounce of sunscreen on your whole body.
- Seek shade between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
- Wear protective clothing when outdoors.
- Be extra cautious around water, sand or snow as these elements reflect the sun's damaging rays.
- Check for signs of skin cancer in the mirror monthly and with our dermatologist yearly.
