In recent reports, researchers found that contact sports participants -- particularly football players -- are more than twice as likely as other athletes to be colonized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), an infection caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections.

• 31% of contact sport athletes carry MRSA
• 23% of non-contact sports carry MRSA

Athletes are asked to practice good hygiene including washing hands regularly, shower after every game and practice, wash equipment frequently and their uniforms and towels, and not to share personal items. Wound or cuts should be covered appropriately and refrain from playing or practice.
