Dear Dr. Lupo:

I am an Asian female in her late 20's (medium toned skin) and was wondering how to treat or at least improve dark circles under the eyes. I do not want to inject nor have surgery on them which I know is a popular option. My circles are the only problem, I do not have any excess fat or bags under the eyes. It seems that my skin under my eyes is really thin making my dark circles more prominent. I am looking for laser procedures if that is possible. Thank you.

Sachie, Gretna

Dear Sachie:

Darkening under the eyes can be from sinus congestion causing a bluish hue under the skin that shows through if the skin is thin. Taking oral antihistamine/decongestants and using retinoids and peptides to thicken and strengthen the skin may improve this non-invasively. If pigment is also a factor, the retinoid creams should also help brighten the skin as well.  If you do not see an improvement after trying these options for a while, then we can discuss a laser treatment that is right for you.

Updates from the Lupo Center
September 2013

September is all about the eyes at the Lupo Center!  One of the first things we notice about a person is their eyes.  This prominent area on the face says a lot about someone including their age, emotion, health and lifestyle.  Even though aging is an inevitable process, we never want our eyes to say we are older than we truly are.

There are several factors that cause the skin around the eyes to age, which diminishes a person's youthful, fresh appearance.  Age-related changes to the eye area include wrinkles, dark circles, drooping brown lines or eyelids and thinning lashes.  Below, we will discuss these common skin conditions and ways that we can help rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes.

This month we will have a NEOCUTIS Bio-Boost Eye Event and a few promotions that will have your eyes looking more youthful and brighter just in time for the holidays!  Read below for more details.

Brighten Your Eyes for the Holidays!

Here at the Lupo Center, we offer a variety of treatments to rejuvenate the area around the eyes.  Depending on your age, lifestyle or budget, we will customize a treatment plan just for you.  As always, our goal is to soften and improve the signs of aging while still maintaining a natural age-appropriate appearance.

Soften Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles form as collagen naturally breaks down causing loss of facial volume, elasticity and strength. As a result, wrinkles develop because this area is very sensitive to stress caused by facial expressions such as laughing and squinting.  Thanks to the latest developments in dermatological technology, we now have several options for softening unwanted lines and wrinkles:

Improve Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common problem for many people caused by genetics, unhealthy diet, allergies and lack of sleep and exercise.  They begin to appear as the delicate skin around the eyes becomes thinner and fat begins to diminish causing the skin to become more translucent to blood vessels below the surface.  Fortunately, there are several non-surgical treatments now available to help improve or eliminate the condition:

  Restylane before and after2

Treat Brow Heaviness and Shape

Drooping brown lines or eyelids can be caused by several factors including lifestyle, genetics, injury or muscle/nerve disorder, but age also a common cause of droopiness.  Brows or eyelids that begin to sag because of age are caused by collagen naturally breaking down losing elasticity and firmness and not being able to support the skin.  Because the appearance of the eye area is often our first impression of someone, we understand the importance of the shape and position of the brow line and eyelids and use the following treatments to enhance the eyes:

Botox Brows

Improve Eyelash Thinning

Thinning lashes can also be caused by the same factors as mentioned above.  However, just as your regular hair follicles begin to die with age, so do your eyelash follicles causing the growth of some lashes to slow down or stop.  Since 2008, patients have seen significant growth and thickening of their eye lashes with a treatment of Latisse in as little as 8 to 12 weeks.

Do You Choose Your Board Certified Dermatologist as Your Cosmetic Surgeon?

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery recently conducted a survey and found that most people who are interested in receiving a cosmetic treatment would choose their board certified dermatologist as their dermatologic surgeon.  Respondents said the specialty in which a physician is board certified is the most important factor when contemplating a cosmetic procedure - more important than cost, physician referral or eight other choices.

We want to ensure you that both Dr. Mary Lupo and Dr. Kate Holcomb are board certified dermatologists who have specific education and training in a number of medical and cosmetic treatments and are up-to-date on the latest developments in the field of dermatology.  While Dr. Lupo and Dr. Holcomb have gone through training, they are also qualified to train others.

Dr. Lupo has been a Botox Cosmetic trainer since 2002 and was on the original advisory board for Sculptra Aesthetic in 2003. She was chosen to be an FDA investigator for Juvederm in 2004, and she also participated in the FDA approval of Botox for the treatment of crow's feet. Dr. Lupo is a certified trainer for Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Sculptra, and she is the only physician in Louisiana that is certified to train other physicians on all six of these aesthetic procedures.

While serving in the military, Dr. Holcomb trained dermatology residents in medical and cosmetic dermatology at the National Naval Medical Center, and she trained family medicine residents medical dermatology at Camp Lejeune.

To read more about the survey conducted, visit the Plastic Surgery Practice's website.
