As you age, formerly smooth skin can give way to lines, wrinkles, creases, and folds. The aging process breaks down the components in our skin that support its structure, firmness, and elasticity. Additionally, wrinkles and folds can appear on your skin “prematurely,” making you look older than your age. Exposure to UV from the sun and tanning can also break down those structural components.
Fortunately, the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology can replenish some of what was lost in the skin due to aging and environmental factors. With wrinkle reduction treatments, our New Orleans, Louisiana team can renew your skin for a smooth, radiant, more youthful appearance.
We offer a range of procedures suitable for treating wrinkled skin. These treatments include injectables, lasers, energy-based devices, peels, and other rejuvenation techniques. Our recommendations for an individualized treatment plan are based on a thorough evaluation and consultation with you, during which we discuss your lifestyle, personal preferences, and goals.
Factors that we consider when making recommendations include:
Not all lines and wrinkles are the same. For instance, “expression lines” are associated with muscle activity. Certain muscles are engaged in the process of making a facial expression, such as frowning or squinting. As skin loses collagen and elastin, the lines that were once only visible when the muscles were engaged are now present on your face all of the time in the form of deep horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, or vertical creases between the eyebrows (frown lines). Neurotoxins, such as Botox®, Jeuveau®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Daxxify®, may be recommended to treat these lines. These products are injected into the specific muscles that are engaged when making the expression. The treated muscles then relax, and the overlying skin stays nice and smooth.
As vital proteins like collagen and elastin are broken down due to the effects of aging, sun damage, smoking, and other factors, we may recommend products and treatments to help restore the signs of collagen loss. In doing so, we can plump up and fill in lines, wrinkles, folds, and other depressions to smooth the skin’s surface and restore a more balanced, vibrant facial shape and definition. Other injectables known as “fillers” restore volume loss. Some of the best–known, such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Belotero, Versa, and the RHA collection, are made from Hyaluronic Acid. This water-loving molecule is naturally present in the skin, and its levels also decline due to the aging process and the other factors mentioned above. By restoring some of what was lost with filler, the HA attracts water to plump the skin, smooth irregularities, and soften wrinkles.
Some injectable fillers (such as Sculptra, Radiesse, and Renuva) stimulate collagen production deep in the skin. These biostimulators, also known as collagen stimulators, are associated with particularly long-lasting results due to their ability to renew the fibers essential for the skin’s firmness and structural support.
Yes – many do! Numerous lasers and other devices that use energy like RF (radiofrequency) precisely target your trouble spots. They generally trigger a process of controlled heating to stimulate collagen remodeling or renewal. Other services, such as microneedling, encourage the formation of new collagen and elastin by creating small perforations in the skin. As the skin heals, more collagen and elastin are produced to gradually firm and smooth the skin. Chemical peels promote cell renewal and can also stimulate collagen and elastin; however, lighter chemical peels are appropriate for superficial or mild lines. If you have deeper wrinkles, a more intense peel is generally necessary.
The above point about peels gets to the heart of considerations when selecting the best treatment for you. While some treatments may yield more dramatic/faster results, they are often associated with longer social downtime and healing compared to options that require fewer treatment sessions to achieve results, and necessitate little to no downtime.
