Laser Hair Removal

“One of the most practical luxuries you can give yourself. Imagine a life without shaving or waxing!”
- Dr. Lupo
For most of history, the only available methods of removing unwanted hair produced temporary results. These methods, such as shaving, plucking, and waxing, may leave skin irritated and bumpy. Through advances in technology in the field of dermatology, it has become possible to get rid of unwanted hair permanently – along with razors, tweezers, and uncomfortable hair removal practices.

In the United States, laser hair removal is one of the most popular laser treatments. Throughout the course of a treatment plan, men and women can effectively eliminate hair on various areas of the body, including the face, arms, underarms, back, abdomen, breasts, buttocks, bikini area, and legs. Most of the time laser hair removal treatment is sought to stop the growth of unwanted hair on a certain part of the body. However, some of our patients find this treatment ideal for the elimination of painful ingrown hairs. A side benefit of laser hair removal is that stubble and dark spots at hair follicles also disappear after hair growth ceases.

The popularity of laser hair removal makes this a prime service at laser centers and med spas. We encourage our patients to avoid such institutions, which have no direct physician supervision and therefore may not be ideal to achieve the best results. Sometimes, excessive hair growth on the face or other part of the body a result of a medical condition. In consultation with a patient for laser hair removal, our Board-certified dermatologist will ask questions that may uncover a potential hormonal problem that requires medical treatment.

Smooth skin that lasts - New Orleans, LA practice welcomes revolutionary SPLENDOR X laser hair removal system

SPLENDOR X Laser hair removal workstation & Logo - New Orleans, LA Patients of all skin types and hair colors can reduce or eliminate unwanted hair, comfortably and safely. For more than three decades, Dr. Mary Lupo has been on the leading-edge of aesthetic technologies designed with the patient experience and optimal outcomes at heart. Dr. Lupo is excited to offer the SPLENDOR X Laser Hair Removal in New Orleans, LA at the Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology. As an early adopter, Dr Lupo is among a select group of practitioners in the U.S. to treat patients with this system, which elevates permanent and advanced laser hair removal procedures in unprecedented ways.

A revolutionary new hair removal solution

Earlier-generation laser devices for hair reduction or removal were limiting; their effectiveness was confined to individuals with fair skin and dark hair. These devices would search out hairs for treatment, so a contrast between hair and skin color was necessary. Moreover, pioneering devices were risky for individuals with tan skin or darker complexions. Side effects included permanent hypopigmentation or lightening of the skin in the treatment area. Lasers of the time also used shorter wavelengths, so treatment was limited to small areas. In addition to the time commitment, early devices were not well-tolerated by many patients.

SPLENDOR X eliminates all of the concerns and risks associated with first-generation laser systems. Manufactured by a global leader in lasers and other energy-based aesthetic technologies, Lumenis, the SPLENDOR X system has many features that allow superior comfort, efficiency, and effectiveness in the reduction or removal of unwanted facial and body hair. These unique characteristics include:
  • Proprietary BLEND X™ technology – Described as synchronized and adjustable emission of Nd:YAG and Alexandrite wavelengths, this blend allows hair follicles to be targeted at two depths. Treatments are precise for optimal results. Since wavelengths are fired at varying proportions, treatments are also tailored to your unique skin tone, and specific hair color and thickness.
  • Unique UV Skin Marking grid matrix – After one of the Lupo Center’s skilled technicians applies a cooling gel to the treatment area, a square-shaped grid is also applied to guide precision delivery of laser energy from SPLENDOR X’s small, handheld device. Applying the laser to boxes of skin, rather than conventional round spots, allows for the fastest treatment for hair removal as larger areas can be treated at one time. There is no need to retouch areas, which further minimizes burns and other side effects associated with less precise treatment approaches and overlap.
  • Comfortable cooling – Comfort is built-in to the SPLENDOR X system; the advanced handpiece comes equipped with a Dual Cooling System that delivers cold air over the laser beam, right above the treatment area, to actively remove heat from tissues throughout the procedure. Patients may experience a slight sensation, but SPLENDOR X is generally tolerated well due to multiple layers of controlled cooling. It’s also a painless hair removal alternative to other permanent options, such as electrolysis.

What is laser hair removal? - explained by Dr. Mary Lupo
If you are someone looking forward to getting rid of unwanted hair on your body, laser hair removal is your best option to do so. Watch this video as Dr. Mary Lupo from Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology explains what laser hair removal is.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular procedures in the United States. Here at the Lupo Center, we consider it the most practical luxury you will ever give yourself.

Laser hair removal results in the permanent reduction of the hair follicles.

Preparing for laser hair removal

One important thing you need to know before you sign up for laser hair removal is that it will require a series of treatments.

This is because you can only destroy a hair follicle that is in the antigen or growing stage in the follicle. If the hair follicle is empty, the energy is not absorbed to damage the follicle.

So it is very important not to wax or pluck the skin immediately or several days before treatment.

If you remove the hair, not enough energy is absorbed to destroy the follicle, and you will not get permanent results.

Laser hair removal is possibly the best method to eliminate unwanted hair on your body. How should you prepare for this procedure? Watch this video as Dr. Mary Lupo explains the best practices she follows at Lupo Center for Aesthetic and General Dermatology.

Preparing for laser hair removal

It is very important, and we always emphasize best practices at the Lupo Center to shave the area immediately before treatment.

This accomplishes two things.

#1 – it ensures that all of the energy is getting down into the follicle beneath the skin's surface to heat the follicle and damage it.

#2 - It ensures that no surface hairs on the skin will absorb the energy and make the energy go less to where you want it.

But most importantly, any hairs on the skin's surface can be singed or burned, and that can damage the skin and cause a burn, redness, or perhaps even a blister. So the protocol is to shave and maximize the benefit of the energy getting to the target.

Safest laser hair removal for all skin types

Here at the Lupo Center, we use the newest generation of laser, the Splendor X. What's unique about this laser is that it is the optimal laser for all skin types. Even the darkest skin can safely use this laser on them.

In addition, it has two forms of cooling to ensure safety by preventing damage to the skin surface because if the skin surface is heated, you're not going to get the effect and may have side effects.

It also allows the treatment to be as comfortable as possible. Patients need to know that the first treatment is usually the most uncomfortable, and this is due to the density of the hair.

With each treatment, more and more of the hair follicles are permanently destroyed, so there's less heat generated and less discomfort with each subsequent treatment.

Contact us for more information.
SPLENDOR X is indicated to treat skin conditions such as vascular lesions and leg veins. So, you may walk from treatment with less (or no) unwanted hair, as well as more attractive, smooth skin appearance and texture, free of the bumps and discoloration that may also be associated with more time- and labor-intensive hair reduction methods like shaving. How your skin responds to treatment immediately following each session is similar to other noninvasive and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures; for instance, you may notice temporary redness and swelling limited to the treatment sites.

During a consultation at our New Orleans office, Dr. Lupo will discuss other considerations associated with this quantum leap in customized laser hair removal; for example, the number of treatments required depends on if you desire to get thinner hair or if you want to remove all of it completely. The larger the treatment area, the more time required (and sessions necessary) to effectively reduce or remove hair.

Furthermore, hair grows in three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen or active, transitional, and resting stages respectively. Hair can only be treated effectively in its anagen or active phase, so it’s not a one and done treatment. Laser energy targets each follicle, through which hair grows. In the days following treatment, hair in the treated follicles can be brushed away. Once follicles are effectively treated, hair can be gone for good. The same can’t be said of temporary methods such as depilatory creams and waxing, which are also cumbersome and costly.

So thank you and I wanted to congratulate you and enjoy this award. And I hope that you will keep this and display this for your patients for many years to come.

So as a doctor what we always want is safety for our patients, we want effectiveness for our patients and you have helped me have that over many many years now. I am particularly thrilled with your newest innovation with the Splendor X. It is truly a game changing innovation in laser hair removal. The change in spot size and dimension as well as the speed, the double cooling and the plume evacuation piece, all separates it from all other devices that are out there so thank you for doing that and I was honored to be the first in the United States to have that device and it is extremely popular with my patients. Thank you.

Understanding the SplendoX laser hair removal treatment

Understanding the SplendoX laser hair removal treatment
SplendoX is the perfect laser hair removal treatment for all skin types and skin tones. Dr. Lupo explains this laser hair remooval treatment, the different skin types and aspects which will affect the effectiveness of the treatment.

Spring is the optimal time to get your laser hair removal done before it gets really hot and sunny. And what I am going to do today is to discuss with you how laser works, show you the device and explain to you the process. So number one, the first thing we do as a physician is to do a skin tightening for our patients. We use what’s called Fitspatrick skin type 1 through 6. And the Fitspatrick skin typing is based on the skin’s response to Ultraviolet light. For example, a skin type 1 burns very easily and never tans. A skin type 3 will burn but will easily and gradually tan. Skin type 4 is a little bit more olive, tans a little bit more easily etc. Most people in the United States these days are skin types 3 and 4. Because they are mixed race. So it is very important to have a device that is safe and effective for darker skin types. We use this SplendoX because it is good for all skin types because it uses blended laser technology. Now, how does laser hair removal work? All lasers work by the principle of having a target where the wavelength of the energy that is put upon that target is absorbed selectively to generate heat, to give a biological response. So what we want is for the bulb of hair in the follicle to be heated by absorbing the wavelength of energy. This causes heat to occur and it damages permanently that particular hair follicle. That is why a series needs to be done because hair cycle and not all hairs in every follicle are growing at one particular time. So you need to do cyclical treatments. In addition, it is extremely important that there be no hair on the surface of the skin. Any hair on the surface of the skin will absorb the energy first. This will do two bad things. One, it will cause a burn to the skin and two the energy level isn’t getting to the target which is in the bulb underneath the skin. We particularly like this laser because it is two forms of Cooling which protects the epidermis from an unnecessary burn that could leave a discoloration or scar. So it uses both 7-55 Alexandrite and 10-64 nd yag. Some lasers are just nd yag for darker skin and that’s fine. But the problem with that is that nd yag is a little bit more painful. So if you can blend in a little Alexandrite, it makes it less painful. In addition, the forced air cooling and the contact cooling gives both safety and decreased pain. Finally, what you need to know with the two wavelengths is that it actually damages the hair follicle permanently in a more superficial and deeper component. So here we have a patient. She is is of Indian American descent and she is a skin type 4. She has no tan which is very important. Anytime you have a tan on the skin, it causes the laser energy to be absorbed by the superficial pigment of the tan. You get less pigment into the target. Whereas you can set this laser to accommodate the tan and give you deeper penetration and avoid the tan. It is always best to not be tanned to get maximum energy to your target which is deeper in your skin. So here we have this device set for a skin type 4 where we are going to use blended Alexandrite and nd yag laser energy. And I am going to step over here and we are going to get started. And we are all going to put our glasses on. Notice the area is shaved. So we like for patients to stop plucking or waxing for at least one to two weeks. Shaving is perfectly appropriate and we like to shave the day of the treatment. We like to see where the hair is. So we are just going to show you this quick little area. We shaved it and now we are going to go ahead and do the treatment.

Safe and effective laser hair removal for all skin types

Safe and effective laser hair removal for all skin types
Dr. Lupo shows and talks about the unique features of SplendoX that makes it the safest and painless laser treatment for hair removal.

Now we have talked before about the SplendoX laser hair removal device from Lumenis. We have talked about the fact that it has two way flanks that can be blended to get more effective hair removal. And the fact that it has a large spot size for more rapid treatment and the fact that it has two forms of cooling to improve any sensation or pain. It is by far the most painless laser device on the market because it has both forced air cooling and contact cooling. But today with recent news articles about the plume that occurs with laser hair removal, I want to point out this portion. There’s a smoke evacuator called the Plume Evacuator within the handle. The plume of tissue that is destroyed with the laser process is evacuated through this suction. And it’s all encased in one. So this eliminates the plume going through the atmosphere. The plume of laser hair removal is tissue that has environmental toxins but also has viruses. So this is in my opinion, especially in this day and age, the most effective, safe and painless hair removal device on the market.

As the first in the U.S. to offer this revolutionary technology to patients, we have seen firsthand how well SPLENDOR X laser hair removal works

First in the U.S. to offer this revolutionary technology to patients

When the first SPLENDOR X-Lumenis’ state of the art hair removal device-arrived in the US last summer, it went right to Dr. Mary Lupo in New Orleans. I used the new SPLENDOR X on many different patients for about 8 weeks, so I would be very comfortable explaining it and presenting the scientific studies to other doctors. SPLENDOR x features 2 forms of cooling technologies to completely eliminate pain: contact and air cooling. It is the most comfortable hair removal laser any one will experience. SPLENDOR X has “revived the hair removal market in the practices of qualified dermatologists and medical personnel.” Dr. Lupo said. Laser hair removal also eliminates the unsightly bumps from shaving, waxing or when other hair removal methods are used. Currently Dr. Lupo uses both SPLENDOR X and Light Sheer, offering the most advanced hair removal solutions to her patients and keeps buying every Lumenis upgrade. SPLENDOR X – this is how confidence feels.

Laser hair reduction services have been availed at the Lupo center since 1999, during this time period I have always invested in the latest safest and most effective machines on the market. I believe the patients deserve to have machines that are owned and operated by the physician and used by their own trained personnel. When undergoing laser hair treatment you must know that it takes multiple treatments in order to have the laser energy absorbed by a growing hair. Only anagen hairs or growing hairs can be effected by the laser energy it is also used in my practice for folliculitis which is an inflammatory condition that involves the patient having bumps that can often get infected and become scared if left untreated. Here at the Lupo center we will individualize your treatment depending on exactly what your needs are.
