What is excision?
Excision is the surgical removal of the area of cancerous skin cells, and it is performed right in the dermatologist’s office. Dr. Mary Lupo provides this treatment for skin cancer because it can be easily utilized and because continued monitoring of the area can be performed. Skin cancer doesn’t always require invasive treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy. This is more often done for recurring or larger, more late-stage cancers. However, small cancers that are found early with skin cancer screenings can be excised by our team during a simple appointment.Who is a candidate for excision?
Most patients with first-time skin cancer that is diagnosed early enough may be proper candidates for a simple excision with Dr. Mary Lupo. What can I expect during my excision procedure?
Patients who choose to have their skin cancer excised are welcome to book their procedure with Dr. Mary Lupo. The treatment area is properly cleansed and dried, and then a local anesthetic is injected into the area to numb the skin and ensure patients are comfortable. Our dermatologist will then remove the area of concern and some of the skin surrounding it to ensure all areas of cancer have been removed. The area is then sutured and patients are given aftercare instructions when they leave the office. When patients closely follow their aftercare instructions, they can greatly reduce the risk of infection and increase the chances of having less scarring on the skin from the procedure. Scarring will often be determined based on the size of the cancerous mass removed from the skin—the larger the mass, the more likely a scar will be present.How can I prevent skin cancer?
Skin cancer is a cancer that can often be prevented. Patients should take great care in protecting their skin from the sun’s rays with the use of dual-band high SPF sunscreen on a daily basis. Patients are advised to avoid being outdoors during midday when the sun’s UVA and UVB rays are the highest and to wear long sleeves whenever they are out during that time. Patients should also visit the dermatologist at least once a year for a skin cancer screening to be more proactive about diagnosis. If patients notice any changes to their skin such as a mole that changes in shape, size, and color, or a wound that will not heal properly, they are advised to visit their dermatologist as soon as possible to have the area assessed. Skin cancer is often easy to spot by a trained professional and biopsies can be performed to get a positive confirmation that cancer cells are present.
