Q: Can fillers help scars?

A: Yes, for certain types of scars. Fillers will not help raised or widened scars, but fillers, especially Radiesse are excellent for softly undulating, soft-bordered scars. Dermabrasion, CO2 resurfacing and Fraxel Restore are also good options for these types of scars. Finally, deep ice pick scars do best with TCA 90-100% with a sterile toothpick, followed by Fraxel Restore or Fractional CO2.

Q: I just had Juvederm Ultra in my cheeks but I need more volume. How long would I have to wait after Juvederm Ultra to add more volume? I would love to hear your opinion. Thank you.

A: This is a very good (and common) question. There is no scientific data regarding the safety of combining fillers, but many high volume injectors have, for several years now, combined fillers with no adverse events. I usually recommend you wait at least one week to allow any swelling to go down and the new baseline can be determined by your physician. Radiesse is not reversible, as is Juvederm, so you don't want to be over-injected and look like a chipmunk.

Q: My doctor is mixing Radiesse with anesthetic now and it hurts less, but is it as effective?

A: In 2009, Merz, the manufacturer of Radiesse, received FDA approval to mix lidocaine with its calcium hydroxyapatite (Radiesse). It was found to be safe and effective and enormously better tolerated by patients. Physicians now mix lidocaine with other products like Juvederm and Restylane, but it is being done "off-label". If you want less pain with those fillers and also FDA approval you must ask for Juvederm XC or Restylane L. These versions are formulated from the manufacturer with lidocaine. They are much less painful than both the older versions as well as less painful than when product is mixed off label.

Review From Tiffany S.
Dr. Lupo is absolutely amazing! I saw her for botox and filler before my wedding and now I am a devotee of her work. She is a master at accomplishing a natural looking and beautiful result. She has an artist's eye and a surgeon's calm hands. She is personable, kind, and funny, and I always find myself 100% at ease in her office. It is easy to be candid with her and ask for exactly what you want. She is honest and takes the time to communicate with you to make sure you're both on the same page, and you don't feel like she is running in and out of the room and rushing off to another appointment. She gives you her full attention and it makes a world of difference. I highly recommend Dr. Lupo to all my friends and family. Wonderful woman and doctor. Couldn't be happier!
