A: I am so glad you are happy with your filler results. Juvederm Voluma XC is the latest hyaluronic acid filler from the manufacturers of Botox and Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. This new product utilizes a different manufacturing technique called VyCross technology. The result is a more cohesive and harder hyaluronic acid gel filler designed to go much deeper and to generate more lift to the skin and sub-cutaneous tissue. I have been using it in my practice since October, 2013, so I now have over a year of experience. I was also chosen to be trainer for Allergan for Juvederm Voluma XC and have demonstrated the technique at CME meetings. I find it has characteristics different from Sculptra. I often use both at the same time, in the same patient in different areas. This is truly where experience, ethical judgment, and artistic flare make the difference between great results and mediocre or even scary results. In general, Juvederm Voluma XC is superior when one wants and needs a lift to sunken cheeks. It is best when placed in small aliquots between the sub Q and the bone. This gives the desired lift to the entire face. You might still need Sculptra, but you likely will need less if Juvederm Voluma XC is added to your cheeks. In fact, it is the only dermal filler that has the FDA approval to advertise its benefits for cheek lifting. All other fillers used here that lift are being used legally off label.
Q: I have had Juvederm Ultra XC in my lips and I really like the result. I understand that the new Juvederm Voluma lasts 2 years. Should I switch?
A: In my opinion, no. Juvederm Voluma is designed to be injected very deep, either in the deep subcutaneous tissue, or on the bone to lift tissue that is depressed due to age-related volume depletion. The lips are not the safest place to inject this new dermal filler. I am currently in the FDA study for Juvederm Volbella, the “sister” product of Voluma specifically designed for the lips. By all early indications it will be superior to the Juvederm Ultra XC product you are currently getting.
