The healing process can take up to a week, but allows individuals the ability to enjoy better texture, tone and even color to their skin. It can also firm up the skin, reducing the signs of aging and allowing more youthful, radiant skin to show through.
In order to experience effective results, patients must take great care to protect their skin after the procedure. Immediately after treatment, patients may want to prevent swelling by keeping their head elevated, reduce warm skin with the application of ice packs, and moisturize the skin to avoid itching and tightness. Patients should also apply sunscreen of at least 30 SPF to shield the skin from sun’s rays, and keeping the skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also highly recommended.
The next day, the skin may feel tight, so patients are urged to continue applying moisturizer. Swelling may be relieved with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, and patients may notice an unusual grid-like texture on the skin as well as a rough, sandpaper feel. This is completely normal and is just a sign of the skin’s rejuvenation and healing process.
Over the next few days, patients may begin to notice their skin exfoliating, though this skin should not be picked or peeled off. Any peeling done well before the skin is ready can result in permanent scarring or discoloration.
